Samuel, 2020
There are two things I know for sure about Sam. 1) He's hard working. 2) He's an adventurous spirit.
Let's start with the latter. So during our session, I mentioned that it was a bummer the rains had caused the river to rise so much, there was a really cool place in the center of the water where the river pours over the rocks in a small waterfall. Promptly, without question, he marches off to find a log. He and his father -who is totally in on this- proceed to throw the log off a ledge into the rapids of the river, wedge it between the bank and the rocky bar I spoke of, lower down onto the shaking log and cross into the middle of the river.
...
What a guy. Totally crazy. And totally cool. I mean, generally when I say I wish something would happen I sincerely wish we could figure out a way. I am in the habit of meaning what I say, even if I pretend it's only half-hearted. Then he just made it happen, like, BAM, let's do it. I'm just glad he didn't fall into a river half way through our session ha!
Secondly. Our church does service projects once a month, and last month we went out to my Grandparents house to do some major property work as a result of the fires and windstorms. And, on his eighteenth birthday, Sam came and worked his tail off for hours. I was genuinely blown away, a service project on my birthday and I'd probably have said "Yeah see ya." But not now. He taught me something. Something about giving and showing up and doing your part and blessing other people. If you read this Sam, I don't feel I properly got to say thank you, but please know that meant so much to my entire family. Thank you.
So. To the Senior charge: No matter what you do next, just be present. Be in the moment while you're living it. Your family, your girlfriend, your church and friends - we're all super proud of who you are and who you'll be. You'll figure it all out. Have fun, live life, keep working hard and growing yourself. Serve God because I swear He's all that matters and so worth pursuing. You'll always have a core group to lean on, which is amazing. We've got your back.
And thanks for not impaling yourself with that pitchfork. That was kinda a close one man.
Love, Sarah
