I remember sitting in an apartment in Delaware, the day before we were going to New York City. It was a quiet day, we had made no plans. Everyone needs a day with no plans once in a while. And whereas I had the luxury of sitting in a comfortable chair with a new book, I peeked up across the room at her.

We had promised on this trip not to think too much about work or school. If either of us even thought it we were supposed to say, "Sparkleworks." Why? Because it was a weird and random thing to say. Not something you want to say strolling Central Park hand-in-hand with your boyfriend. Not something you want to say staring up at the Washington Monument. Not something you want to be thinking and worrying about while enjoying your life.

In total we said it three times.

Why am I telling you this?

Because that day was different. As I was swept away into a beautiful literary world, I hear, "Do you think Matt will mind if I use some of his paper?"

Sparkleworks. "No. I don't think he'll mind."

On went the little white headphones to listen to her lectures, her pencil flying furiously across the scratch paper. For one hour. Two hours. Three. ... There in that little Delaware apartment.

I'm telling you this because her hard work is finally bearing the fruit of graduation.

I am so proud of her. Words fail me. (And if you know anything about me you'll know how rare that is). Her strength and determination have been a beacon in my life, her kind spirit and faithfulness as a friend continuously blow me away. Her faith runs deep and I've seen her unshakable hope during life's hardest trials. Hope that makes her life's song sing out all the louder and clearer.

I've seen her get up each day and tackle life fearlessly, adventurously and persistently. That means she didn't give up when she got tired. She didn't give up when the workload became heavy. She didn't give up when she had to wake up at 4:30am to come home at 8pm and be asleep by 9. She didn't and doesn't give up when it looks discouraging, when those early mornings seem like they'll last forever.

And now I am proud to announce she is a graduating Respiratory Therapist. She knows the lungs inside and out and everything that can possibly happen to them. Her incredible skill mixed with her empathy make her an amazing RT. And I couldn't be more proud.

So. To my best friend. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; may He turn His face toward you and give you peace.

Here's to all our adventures,

and those yet to be.

for now and forever

you've got a sister in me.

"I'm reaching out, I'll chase you down I dare you to believe how much I love you now Don't be afraid, I am your strength We'll be walking on the water, dancing on the waves..."
