Family Session

I had the honor of doing this family's photos just before I moved back from school. I was privileged to have gotten to work under Shannon for several months and she became one of my dearest friends at the school I attended.
We hiked out to one of the family's favorite trails in the mountains. I had the sniffles but we all agreed we were still up to the photo shoot! However, I will admit, I made a miscalculation. I set our time to about an hour before sunset, but we were on the wrong side of the mountain and the sun vanished almost as soon as we got there. However, praise the Lord, I am actually pleased that this is an example of what can happen no matter the circumstances.
Right off the bat we hiked to a place where we got the tale end of the sun. Little Dude and I had fun running around and exploring as I hoped to get him comfortable around me before I introduced the camera. In family sessions my goal is to get as many important photos upfront as I can. Our window of attention with small children is fairly short, so I try to take advantage of it. Today that worked in our favor with the sunlight, as well, as we were able to get many of the shots with the beautiful sun flares upfront.
Less than ten minutes in, the last of the sun slipped away and we hiked further in and down. Stuffed animals and full tummies were the key to success for these little guys! I like to let them play and explore to try to make the best experience for them as possible. This is also an opportunity for some great candids.
Little did I know my "sniffles" were actually turning into a bad fever and the flu! Oops. The hike back was very steep and tough but thankfully in the fresh air everyone stayed healthy and the job was a success! I was frankly just so pleased we were able to do them before I left California. I don't typically shoot in blue hour but I think they turned out simply lovely.
